Web Developer, kinds, functions and more

Updated: Mar 22

web developer

A web developer is responsible for creating websites through complex lines of code, using a variety of programming languages, such as HTML, CSS, Javascript and others.

Also known as Web Programmer, he/she fulfills a role that aims to design, code, and maintain innovative and reusable websites and web applications.

Web developer: main types

  • Frontend

A front end developer is someone who takes a website design from a client or design team and writes the code needed to implement it on the web.

A good front end web developer would be proficient in at least three programming languages - HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

  • Backend

While front end developers are responsible for client-side programming, back-end developers take care of the server-side.

They have to create the code and programs that drive the website's server, databases, and any applications it contains.

The most important function of a back-end developer is the ability to create clean, efficient code that does what is required as quickly as possible.

  • Full stack

Full-stack developers use both front-end and back-end strategies and processes, which means they are perfectly placed to oversee the entire process.

Main Functions

Here are some of their functions:

  • Create websites and applications.

  • Implement the graphical interface of the project to make it attractive to the user, generating conversions or traffic to the website.

  • Maintain the architecture and functionalities.

  • Work on tests and supports in different languages correcting BUGs identified.

  • Working on the back-end of a website to perform configurations.

On the other hand, it is essential to define the norms and quality standards in which the products or sites are developed, constantly updating on new technologies available.

He must explain the technologies he is in charge of, so the other members of the team understand them, using simple language.

The fine-tuning is done in internal courses for his colleagues, so it is his obligation to answer any concerns or technology problems that may arise.

Web design vs. web development

These professions are different and have the following functions:

Web designer:

The web designer is the person or group of people who are responsible for creating the concept of the website.

  1. They can decide if the website needs a certain color, with certain content and pages.

  2. They can do things like create infographics, logos and videos, and they will definitely tell the developer where these elements should be placed on the website. However, they take no part in building the web page or the underlying code.

Web developer:

The web developer takes the designer's concepts and creates the code necessary to turn them into a web page and make it available to regular people.

It is important to realize that, although the web developer and designer could be the same person, there is almost always an overlap between front-end development and design, but their roles are different.
